How to Care for Pearls So They Stay Beautiful for Years
Pearls are timeless. Whether you wear them every day or only on special occasions, they deserve proper care to preserve their natural luster and elegance.
Put Them on Last
Always put on pearl jewelry after applying makeup, perfume, or hairspray. Chemicals found in cosmetics can damage the pearl surface (nacre) and cause loss of shine.
Proper Storage
Store pearls flat, ideally in a soft pouch or fabric bag. Never store them together with other jewelry – they are soft and can easily get scratched.
Wear Them Regularly, but Mindfully
Pearls benefit from contact with your skin – natural body oils help maintain their hydration and shine.
However, it is important to remember that pearls are a very delicate, organic material, and improper wear can lead to gradual wear over time.
Frequent wearing during sports, in high temperatures, or while sweating may cause buildup of sweat, oils, and dirt on the surface of the pearls, which can eventually lead to slight yellowing or loss of luster.
How to (Not) Care for Pearls
Pearls are organic gemstones and require gentle handling. To prevent cracking and maintain their beauty, follow this rule:
“Last on, first off.”
What Damages Pearls the Most:
Cosmetics and chemicals Perfumes, hairsprays, creams, and makeup contain substances that can damage the pearl surface (nacre) and cause dullness.
Moisture and water Never wear pearls while swimming (in a pool, sea, or shower). Chlorine and salt dry them out and weaken the silk thread they are strung on, which may stretch or break over time.
Dryness, heat, and sunlight Pearls require natural humidity. Prolonged exposure to dry environments, high temperatures, or direct sunlight can cause them to dry out, lose their luster, and in extreme cases, even crack.
Mechanical stress Pearls are soft and sensitive to pressure and friction. Layering with other jewelry, sports, or prolonged continuous wear can lead to gradual wear or damage.
Clean Them Gently
After each wear, we recommend wiping pearls with a soft, dry cloth.
If pearls lose their shine or become slightly discolored, you may gently rinse them in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap. Never use harsh cleaning agents or abrasive materials. Always dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Always Let Them Dry Completely
Never store pearls while damp. Moisture can damage their surface and reduce their shine.
Beauty Tip
Pearls love contact with your skin. The natural moisture of your body helps maintain their hydration and radiant glow. After wearing, simply wipe them gently with a soft cloth.
Pearls are beautiful, but delicate. With proper care, they can last and bring you joy for many years.
